Bridgeport series I collet not locking

Good morning all,
I have a post 1977 2hp Bridgeport brand series 1.
It has new brakes, and they will stop the spindle cold when I turn the unit off, so no problem there.

However, the brake will not hold the spindle while I try to loosen the drawbar to release or tighten a collet.

The good news, I currently have no collet in the machine, so I'm not stuck, but of course, without a collet in the machine, It's a really pretty sculpture with no real use.

Any ideas?

Is the drawbar okay. Sounds to me like the threads are messed up.

Also, were you possibly over torquing the drawbar. You want it tight but not insanely tight.

Drawbar looks perfectly fine.
Then I swapped it for a spare I had.
Works great now.

Thanks!

Keep in mind that if you have the spindle in neutral the brake will not hold at all. It has to be in either Hi or Low range.

Just a note,
Ted
