Default Bridgeport spindle and tooling - what to do?

Just getting into the mode of purchasing some tooling for my Bridgeport 2J. I have ZERO R8 tooling as of yet. I know it's pretty available. I live in machine tool mecca / Detroit area.

I am just wondering if i should swap the spindle out of the machine for something like the Erickson Quick change and / or NMTB 30 spindle to take advantage of cheap tooling? I don't know that i will ever upgrade to a different machine, but i could see it happening down the road. I use the bridgeports at work and find that end mills can walk out sometimes.

I'm sure it's a can of worms, but what makes sense here?

I am in the same boat. I just picked up a Bridgeport with some R-8 collets. But interested in going to other tooling now before I get heavily invested.

    I'll be watching.

Hard to beat R8 for cheapness or easy to get. Thats probably the best thing about them.

I'd just keep the R8 spindle. I don't think it's worth the expense to convert. Buy good collets, you'll be glad you did.
