eztrak 3rd axis

hi, i have a 3 axis ez trak mill with the old style cantilever arm quill drive , i recently acquired an elrod quill drive , my question is will it function the same way as my old style drive . Will it still read scale for z axis position like it does now without adding an encoder on motor and another axis board.

Most Trak's utilize a rotary encoder and use the scale for when the ballscrew is disengaged. The cantilever style typically ran off only a scale.

mine is like that now, but my question is , will the elrod style z axis work same way , still using only the scale for positioning with the motor only driving movement but getting feedback from the scale inside of the elrod unit as to positioning of the z axis

No. The scale signal is basically shutoff when the motor is running in 3 axis mode.

Some of those cables are going to have to be made. Post a picture of the inside of your cabinet and I will let you know.

I'm doing the same thing with my 2-axis Ez Trak DX II. Upgrading to 3 axis with the Elrod kit.

Can I buy and wire in a 3rd axis drive board and buy an SEC servo to get the 3rd axis working?

I am still in the process of putting my 3rd axis kit together but the list below is the list if items my 1998 DX machine apparently needed for this conversion. This list came from a Hardinge rep many years ago. I have been using DWG 94-3390 for a wiring diagram (find a copy at the vintage machinery website) and at this point I have everything I think I need just need to find the time and courage to put it together. Hope this helps you or anyone else that might be pursuing this conversion.
