Facemill option

What is the general recommendation for a 3hp knee mill when considering a face mill with intergral r8 shank ? Option available is 2.5” diameter with 5 flutes or 3” diameter with 6 flutes?

Maybe thermite will chime in and tell me to grow a pair.

Seriously though, this will be a new purchase so I can’t try both out. They both use SEHT inserts so 4 cutting edges are a plus.

I use the Walter F2280 with R8 shank. The inserts have eight sides. This is something like it except the 2280 has five inserts.

I would pick the 2.5" dia, 'cause when changing the inserts one pack of ten gives two complete sets, while the six insert set requires 3 packs of inserts before coming out even.

The smaller diameter cutter will give slightly flatter surfaces than the larger.

It depends what you are looking for. SEHT inserts do have 4 edges, but the geometry is not the best in the world. That style of insert is way better than a flat top (SPXX) but not as good as others. With that style of inert, you're looking at about 0.100 DOC max. IMO, the size is about right for a BP or clone.

If you want deeper cuts, you need different inserts.
As far as thermite, you'd listen to a guy that's never run a BP?
