Recently I purchased an HLV-B. There was nothing obviously wrong with it other than normal wear and the price was fair. I only have 240 single phase available so I decided to run the 440v motor with an A-B Powerflex 70 VFD pegged at 60hz connected to a 2:1 isolation transformer and (mostly) completed that retrofit over the weekend.
Now that I have been able to make some parts, there are some concerning noises that seem to be coming from the spindle bearings and I am not able to produce fine surface finishes that I am used to seeing on Hardinge lathes. There is no detectable runout on the exterior of the spindle and the normal 3 lobed wear pattern on the inside. There is about 0.0008" of end play.
1. My headstock is stamped HLV-B 336-3. Does this fall into the "group 124 to 399" that apparently does not have a quill type spindle? It appears match the diagram shown here: https://www.csparks.com/hardinge/Manual/Page18-19.jpg
2. Does anyone know what bearings I should use? I found this thread listing HLV-BK bearing sizes:
https://www.practicalmachinist.com/...rdinge-hlv-bk-spindle-bearing-numbers-173719/
It lists the angular contact pair as 18mm wide x 55mm ID x90mm OD and the single rear bearing as 16mm wide x 50mm ID x 80mm OD. There is a pair of NSK 7011CTRDULP4Y bearings on Ebay that should work for the front if that is the correct size. For the rear bearing, will just about any sealed bearing that fits work, such as a 6010-2rs? This setup seems similar to the bridgeport spindle setup and Hardinge sent me a low quality bearing when I ordered a replacement upper bearing a few months ago.
