Hi all,

I would like to apologize in advance with my lack of knowledge in this field but I figured there is no better place to ask a question like this. I am in the market for a lathe and have had my eyes set on a Hardinge TFB or HLV, after using an HLV in college for a few years. I have found a running machine for a very reasonable price and am planning to inquire more if I am able to confirm that these parts still exist somewhere. The TFB-H in question is missing the compound slide and tool post, I am wondering if attaining these parts is going to be a nightmare or if (like my bridgeport) they are relatively easy to find.
I have attached a picture of the lathe in question below. (looks like i'll need a handle too)

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I agree with all car2 has posted. But if you are up for a challenge, you might check with a couple of the shops that specialize in rebuilding/retrofitting Hardinge machines. They may have the major bits and pieces that you'll need to make that lathe complete. But, as noted, fitting them to your lathe will not be trivial. Try Paul Babin and Paul Opuda. There is also an outfit in Chicago that are Hardinge specialists but I cannot recall their name.

Looks like a $500 parts machine to me. There are some parts still there that could be sold. Consider the motor voltage when deciding the value. I think it would be impractical to try to make it complete with OEM parts.

To clarify you need the cross slide, crossfeed nut, cross slide gib, and an entire compound as well.
Possibly a crossfeed dial as well, this machine was tipped over on its face.

Call hardinge. See if they can supply but get the price too. Be sure to be sitting down when you
read it.

Another potential use for this machine is to install an Omniturn CNC conversion on the bed and sell off the tailstock and carriage parts and power feed.

Omniturn is not making retrofit kits anymore unless they have changed their minds. I bought the last kit for the HXL/CHNCII. They could possibly have a kit laying around that would work with the TFB/HLV-H center height and bed width. I would ask today because if they do have one, it may not be there tomorrow.

If you happen to learn of this machine being “parted out”, I’m certainly interested in the tailstock.
