    Default Hardinge turret lathe

    Good morning

Is the nose on a Hardinge ESM 59 the same size as on the later models, such as the DSM or DVM?

    Thanks

Yes. Hardinge patented the taper nose design, applying for the patent 21Dec1904. They made Cataract brand lathes with several sizes of collet, from No. 3 to No. 7. The Cataract No. 5 is the one that became known as 5C. So the taper nose dimensions for the 5C collet spindles has not changed since 1904.

In addition to lathes, the taper nose spindles were available on Hardinge dividing heads and indexers.

I have never heard of a model DVM.

As Larry notes, the first number is the collet size.
The second is the nominal work diameter/"swing over the ways"

Just be sure that if you are not looking at the machine yourself, that it is properly described.
Many adverstise any second op Hardinge as "DV-" regardless is being an ESM or "splitbed"
Not infrequently, advertisers assume spindle is 5c, and have not actually verified.

I've got running machines & parts of at least half a dozen "split beds".
Most were originally 49's. (4c collet, 9" nominal swing)

The spindle nose on a 49 is smaller both internally and externally than on a 59.
