HLV-H Brake solonoid noise

Been tying to fix the brake on an early hlv-h (uk model) . The cork was knackered because the operators have been running with the brake on (by fiddling the switch into a non-existant mid position) because the solonoid is very noisy. It is pulling in OK but with spring pressure it just rattles like a pair of hair clippers.

The solonoid is a square block shaped one, with a T shaped armature. The stator was hammered so i ground both bits to a flat (checking clearances etc.) thinking this might improve the final 'grab' but to no avail.

ISTR something about the copper shorting loops (which are present).

Any idea welcome.

Well, I've fixed it.

It was the copper loops in the armature. Apparently they maintain the magnetic field as the coil current reverses.

The onne on this machine were soft soldered and, no surprise, the solder had cracked leaving the loop open circuit.

I cleaned then up and resoldered . Now the solenoid is nice and quiet... and the brake works.
