Jet Lathe vs Hardinge (Amateurs question)

I have a new model Jet Lathe 13 x 40 and it does a great job for most of the work I do. While dialing the the tailstock from front to back (x axis) is easy and accurate. In order to align the tailstock Up/down, so that a reamer goes in perfectly straight I would need to shim the back of the tail stock by a few thou.

Are hardinge tool room lathe more accurate on tail stocks alignment? Are they more easily adjustable or would I need to shim them too.

No provision for up or down movement. There is a spacer on the operator side that could be jacked with if rebuilding or something. In normal practice no adjustments at all. Original alignment from the factory was very well done.

A floating reamer holder can address this problem too.

Probably, your lathe is too new. tailstocks bases tend to wear more toward the hadtock. Therefore, in new and remanufactured lathes is common practice to "adjust" them to point slightly upward, so that they will have longer usable life before pointing too much downward.

Definitely, you want to use a floating reamer holder.
