Default Need help removing a worm gear from Millport head

    Hi,

I'm in the process of repairing a 1973 Millport mill. A prior owner must have broken the shaft that turns the worm gear for rotating the head. I believe it's the Adjusting Worm Shaft with key. It broken near the worm itself, so at this point, this is a little bit of the shaft on either side of the worm and I'm unable to get the old worm and shaft piece out of the machine in order to replace it.

I can barely get a pair of skinny needle nose pliers on the broken portion of the shaft, but it appears to be stuck; possibly the shaft is slightly bent or just stuck from years of gunk buildup. I don't want to do anything that might damage the head casting.

This is a picture showing the worm, broken shaft is about 1/4 inch in length on either side of the worm.

    Any ideas on removing it?

    Thanks,
    Rob

    Thanks.
