    Dennis,
    I get your point about torque multiply with "gearing" down motor.

    My highest torque application is about 700-800 rpm (3" facemill in steel).

    To achieve that in back gear with an 1800 rpm motor, with 1:8 back gear, I'd need the motor to run at 120hz with 1.5:1 belt ratio. That makes high speed 2,500 rpm at 60hz.

    Alternatively, if I have a 1:2 pulley ratio, 60hz in high gear is about 900 rpm, not bad.
    Then max speed in back gear at 120hz would be 230 rpm, for big drills.

    It's interesting that my proposed 1:2 ratio on an 1800 rpm is about the same as Adama's 0.75 ratio on his 1400 rpm base speed motor.

    Still chewing on it. I've built a little spreadsheet so I can do all sorts of "what ifs" before I make my mind up.
