    FEA's pretty easy. Selecting material parameters is pretty easy. Getting your constraints and load set to encompass everything reality will throw at your design? That's the real trick. Without that it's just a pretty picture and false confidence.

    In Aus standards Eulers covers buckling there are safety reduction factors applied to it as well.
    Not sure on American Standards, but getting a selections of appropriate standards would be a good start then you know what to design to.

    There is a neat little program called topo strut it optimises a shape for a load, its only indicative and it is a while since i used it, worth a look
