Requesting 3D machine tool CAD models

Any of you have experience interacting w/ machine tool manufacturers in getting 3D solid models of a machine tool (that you own)? Where I work we have (3) large machining centers I'd like to get solid models of; an '06 Nomura horizontal boring mill, '06 SNK double column machining center and '06 Fuji Seiki dual spindle machining center.

I plan on contacting the distributor used for the original purchase first (OEM after that) but just wanted to find out how likely they provide models (or have to pay).

I'm curious what your use for a solid model is. What level of detail do you need modeled? Do you need articulation for exposed moving components? Do you need explicit modeling of required-free-air access volumes for loading, etc.? Are you doing high-quality renders for some customer/public relations purpose? Are you intended to use the solid model in lieu of a parts or repair diagram?

Footprints and elevations are certainly necessary. I'd like to understand how a solid model (as opposed to conventional drawings) is contributing to planning or operating your shop.

you should not expect detailed CAD models of any machines you own. Most manufacturers supply drawings as a way of selling spare parts. Detailed Cad models are considered intellectual property and if you wanted to purchase detailed CAD models it might cost you many millions of dollars.
.
Kurt vise has free cad models of their vises if your register you name / email

i suppose they consider vises less of a trade secret and rely more on the quality of the product they make to sell their product. you might find vises cheaper but i always find they sell a good quality product for a reasonable price
.
i find if you take a few pictures of the machine with a ruler or scale in the picture it is not hard to make a CAD model of the profile of the outside of the machine

FYI...Hermle provides detailed 3D CAD files of their machines for use for CAM machine simulation. You need to sign and return a non-disclosure agreement which means you can't share them.

I have gotten both.

When I was doing machine foundations, I asked for (and our buyer had
to twist some arms) and got a CAD file of the floor bolt locations.

The worst (as far as push back) was an un-named POS bridgemill
(discussed here before) and I explained I only need the floor bolt
locations, and some of the base casting to fit floor plate around
(it was sunk in the floor 2') They ended up sending me the whole
machine model, complete with ballscrews. (and they where worried
about us stealing their designs.....)

Other time was a new "turn/mill" and I asked for (and got with no
problems) the machine complete (in 3-d) to build my fixturing on.

I'll report back here and let you know if I was successful or not. For what they paid for these machines they should hand over the 3D models. I want the models for designing and laying out machining fixtures (for large weldments). Thanks for the info everyone.

Found out from SNK that for the low low price of $12,250 I can buy the solid model of our SNK RB-4V. This model was just a "visual" model, no internals modeled. For that price, I'd think it'd be the whole thing (not that that is really needed). Needless to say, I'll model the table, columns & bridge myself.

i would take pictures with a ruler or scale in the picture for a reference.

I've got a Nicolas Correa FP-5050 5-Axis modelled.
The travels are similar and you could alter it.

Came across this thread and am interested in the MAZAK VARIAXIS 500 STl/parasolid models you have. i am a machinist in IL. trying to get NC simulation using Mastercam. We have this machine on it's way.

if your serious about sharing upload 1 at a time to
Free 3D Models, Free CAD Models
....the site will then convert to different Cad file formats as requested by anyone downloading

I'm not serious about much af anything but I've provided simulators and CAD models several times as the result of the original exchange.

What bugs me is the system here to allow members to contact one another.
I'd prefer not to have to log in and read a message.
I also only respond to what I consider to be legitemate request from people with an actual use for what I provide.
At least generally.

Was there something you needed, Tom?
Get me a proper electronic adress if that is the case and I'll provide a seriously useful response if I can.

You build 3d models for use in cam systems but arent use to how 99% of forums work? How good are your models? Can you post up a pic of one?

Not all that impressive but I bet its functional. How close are you on the spindle and trunnion?

It looks like a builders model so I imagine they are pretty accurate.
I'd be surprised, in fact, if they weren't.
The EVO Linears come with a coup;e of different spindle options.
I don't model these things up myself.
Not as a rule anyway.
