Hi just have a question about oil levels. I have a 1940 atm highduty 20" lathe and I have the oil level right at full when machine is off but when it's running it seems to take most of the oil to the topend to where the level is almost to low.is the oil level sight glass for when the machine is off or running?

I have a 1936 12" High Duty- I fill to the top line with the motor off. The oil draws down a good bit when the spindle is running. Was helpful to blow out all the oil passages and clean out around the spindle labyrinth seal to ensure good flow all over. The front spindle bearing oil tube needs a short length of pipe cleaner bent into a T poked into the tube to reduce flow a bit- too much oil and it will fling out past the spindle labyrinth at higher rpms.
