9" from V to center of flat, roughly 18" maximum swing. Only mark is a casting number on the bed clamp. Ideas? Thanks.

Andy -

If I am reading that number correctly it is 604141. It looks Cincinnati to me - and matches the drawing in the manual.

Manual says it fits a 17 and 19 inch Hydrashift lathe.

Now why couldn't you come up with one for a 13" Cincinnati? I need one! LOL

Dale

Thanks, Dale, that's it. It appears to be the "oversize capacity" version. Sorry it's not for a 13" machine!

Certainly looks like a Cincinnati. When the upper half is open, you should be able to see part number(s) stamped on the machined flats where the jaws close together. If you can find those and post them, we can compare to the Cincinnati factory parts catalog.

Why is it that so many of the Cincinnati steady rests seem to be missing the upper bronze jaw and tip?

Thanks for that. I missed the numbers when I was cleaning it. Didn't expect them to be so tiny.

607059 (base) and 605019 (top) correspond to a "special capacity" steady rest for 17" lathe in the parts book I downloaded.

I know little about Cincinnati Lathe & Tool machines... would this fit a standard Tray Top as well, or are the Hydrashift beds different?

Thanks for the help. This will be available for sale if anyone needs it.

The 605019 top is the special capacity (i.e. extra large) for either a 15" or an 18" Hydrashift lathe.

The 607059 bottom is the special capacity for the 15" Hydrashift lathe. The 18" Hydrashift special capacity bottom is P/N 605021.

The Hydrashift and TrayTop steady rests are not directly interchangeable, as far as I know. I don't have experience with the 15" or 18" Hydrashift models, but I have purchased a couple of the steady rests for the smaller (12-1/2") TrayTop lathes, and they definitely do not fit on the equivalent size (12-1/2" or 13") Hydrashift lathes.

That's different from what's shown in the parts manual I downloaded from Vintage Machinery, which shows the 605019 top being special capacity for 17" or 19" lathes, and the 607059 bottom being special capacity for the 17". The manual doesn't list an 18" lathe. Maybe a difference in era, or in the way they rated swing? The center height of my rest is pretty much right at 17 1/8", which is the swing spec'd for the 17" lathe in the same parts manual.

TrayTop steady rest parts have different numbers in the other manual I downloaded, so I suspect you are correct and they will not interchange with Hydrashift lathes.

Thanks,
Andy

Very interesting. Cincinnati did play with the model names (e.g. the "12-1/2" became the "13"), so perhaps this is a case of the same lathe with a different number. Possibly the 15" became the 17".

Here are the pages from the manual that came with my Hydrashift 12-1/2" lathe. I don't know the publication number as the cover was missing, but it's dated (handwritten) "May 8, 1963".

Thanks for those. Does your manual have a specifications section in the front that gives the actual swing of the 15" lathe? Maybe they switched from the "rated swing" system that was popular among the Cincinnati manufacturers (largest faceplate over carriage wings) to actual swing at some point. In the book I'm looking at, the 17" swings 17 1/8".

Answered my own question... I found a Hydrashift catalog page that gives the swing of the 15" model as 17 1/8" (same as the later 17"). It appears that Cincinnati renamed/rated all their Hydrashift lathes from rated swing (over carriage) to actual swing (over bed) sometime between 1963 and 1970.

Andy -

This is from a 1970 manual. Swing over bed 15 1/2 inches, swing over cross slide 11 inches.

Dale
Yep, the 1970 manual lists the 15" lathe at 15 1/2" over the bed, but the 1962 catalog lists it at 17 1/8" over the bed. It appears they changed the way they rated their swing somewhere in between.
