Best sealant for Autometric gearbox

I'm about to stab the speed box back into my Autometric and am looking for advice for the best sealant. My 'normal' inclination is to use a paper gasket but this guy was made for sealant so far as I can tell and with the fitting of all the shafts and such leading into it there's no room for a gasket, just sealant.

The stuff that was in there originally was (I think) the black sealant that goes hard after a time, I'm sure that there are better materials available now.

Thoughts?

For metal to metal surfaces, where you have oil containment, i like an anerobic sealant. They only dry when air is removed, ie you bolt it together.

It'll get hard after and seal gaps to like .015" ish.

I'd use loctite 518 or loctite 515. You can google those and from heinkles (prolly spelled wrong, but its the parent company) site look at specs of each.

I think they might call it flange sealant, but its used on gear boxes, similar to what you're doing.

Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket #3. Slow drying and non hardening it is made for sealing close fitting machined surfaces.

The Loctite products are part of the Henkle empire.

Another vote for Hylomar, it is a bit difficult to find in the USA.
That is what I used when I put my Brown Sharpe #13 gearbox cover
back together.

I would like to try some Aviation Permatex #3.
Is it like a non-hardening version of Indian Head gasket shellac ?
