Thread: Cincinnatti Milacron DH 50HP Vert Mill

The auction has finished. Can anyone shed some light on A) what the part laying on the pallet under the mill table is for and B) whether or not this machine was ever intended to have support rails secured to the install-location's foundation to support the outer extremes of the rails that the mill table traverses in Y [axis]? I am thinking of support rails like would be found supporting the ends of a mill table on a horizontal boring mill.

From picture 25 of 36 on the auction listing, the pallet under the table looks to be the very support rails you're wondering about. A shame to see a machine like that left out in the weather.

They had experience with such going way back. Many years ago looked at a 1930 #4 High Power vertical with a 14 foot table and extended saddle with support "rails"

Such rails for "knee" machines of course had to be adjustable for elevation

That'll be a great machine when you get it up and running.
When I was installing big Hor bores we left the table ways 0.0005" high at either end. That was to compensate for the weight of the table and workpiece when the table moves to the extreme ends.

Unfortunately it was not me who got this one. The bid price was good but the machine weight was too much to be able to do in-house. Max capacity would require splitting load two ways, and was still a few thousand pounds short. Hopefully there will still be some good opportunities in the future.

Interesting insight and experience regarding setting 0.0005" high either end of the table ways.

We had a #5 horizontal with 60" travel that weighed 16k lbs. I can't see that weighing twice as much.It was originally a 50hp machine.

Those are most likely way covers. I am pretty sure all three axes used them. A 50 hp machine will throw chips all over the place and it is easier to sweep flat covers than poke around in the nooks and crannies with coolant. I have used one of these and they are fun to watch.
