6", 10", 12", 14" Universal? 5:1, 40:1?

Hello all, I am looking for some direction on a Dividing Head.
Are they all basically the same quality or is there a brand(s) that stand out as better?
Which Brand would there be the most support, or users, for?

I have a Horizontal that is a Universal, which to me means the table can be "rotated" so you can cut a "Helical" gear.

Any thoughts are appreciated.
Kind Regards, MAC

I have to ask why one would want something different than what came with the make and model of the mill ?

I have a Horizontal that is a Universal,

The fact that the table swivels is just one item in a list of items required to do any sort of helical milling. The makers of any Universal mill supplied all these needed items when the mill was purchased, and quite naturally they were all designed and built to work together as a SYSTEM.

Well, Because mainly I'm not sure I will be able to locate the same brand Dividing Head, & 2 unless I can get all the Lead attachments I can't take advantage of true spiral helical milling, so just a quality dividing head would work fine for making say spur gears, I assume.

All I can tell you about dividing heads is that every K&T dividing head I've ever seen was a 5:1, where as all the others are 90:1 I believe, and easy to get the number of divisions wanted. I found the 5:1 very hard to get the number of divisions needed and sold it.

Kearney and Trecker made both 5:1 Model K and 40:1 model H dividing heads..Both are clearly explained here:

Both are fine dividing heads capable of producing fine work.. I own both..

Cheers; Ramsay 1:)

Then the first two, readily available to suit size of machine. Sure you can sit a 4" on a big K&T if that is what you want.
You can discount the Universal (swivel table) feature since it is not going to be needed if you never drive your whatever brand, whatever size DH with gearing to the lead screw

You will also come to realize that there are both right hand and left hand Dhs
