Depending how it is attached you might leave it. I have a big CNC lathe where the 80HP motor is outboard of the headstock. The motor mounting platform is a piece of 3" steel plate about 36"x36" and bolted to the base casting with 4 approximately 1" bolts. The lathe weighs 20K lbs and that plate supports lifting the machine with jacks no problem.

That has got to be the heaviest 24 x 48 lathe I have ever seen mentioned outside of turret lathes.

A few photos. I was not quick enough on the trigger at $450.00 (first listed at $3K). It was real tired but actually ran. Thought I was going to give Walter his first order for a L3 hook spanner

'48 spec sheet (thanks Mister Honey) says 14940 Lbs for the somewhat later 25 X 48

It had nothing for tooling except the mounted 3 jaw. It was a few years too early to have the scabbed on hard ways

As we used to say over here - " That's a man's lathe ".

I'm always intrigued to see that big lathes in the US still had the slot in the compound to carry the old lantern style tool post. UK lathes of that ilk would usually have a fixed four way indexable tool post that was designed to be an integral part of the compound.

Regards Tyrone.

Amazing. The geared / belt driven Heavies were derived from the Dual Drive series - which has to say something good about the DD idea

This one takes it a step further - only a few gears in the head stock and a 125 HP DC motor driving. Check out the amps.:D

Absolutely. Motor, belts, and guard as well.

- It is a "lever arm" looking for an excuse to do harm.

- It isn't that hard nor time-consuming to remove nor re-attach.

- It has benefit, not detriment, to clean-up, refurb, confirmation of proper alignment, going forward to PROPER re-assembly after long years of ..... who could even know just-what?

- it makes movement and tiedown easier.

What's not to like about that "package"?

The Carboloy tag may be a clue that this was a cemented carbide test lathe from the Carboloy lab.

Kennametal had a similar, but newer 125HP LeBlond in their Latrobe PA. test facility.

Saw that Carboloy tagged Leblond machine a while back and was a little mistified about that motor. The test lab comments helped to clear the cobwebs. Based on the listing its unclear if the DC drive system for that motor/lathe is with the machine. Might be a little on the expensive side to try to replace that. Otherwise it would be quite the chip maker. That listing has been posted for a Loooong time.
