K&T 2H original paint color(s)?

My K&T 2H (1942, made two months prior to War Finish) will get painted at some point. I have a penchant for authenticity and I’m wondering if anyone knows what paint color or colors were used for this machine in 1942?

Not sure about OEM, but our 1946 2H still has the original paint that looks like a dark navy grey to me. I have a gallon of this stuff to use on the 1909 Hendey, and think it would work well on the K&T too.

Dark machinery gray. Should be evidence of it under some of the covers or behind the motor starter etc...

Thanks guys! Sounds like I may have original paint under some shoddy lighter gray and orange paint that was added later. What do you all think? Here's some pics:

The dark grey in the picture is original.
If you scrape through the dark grey you will find that they used a filler on the casting. You may not want to scrape or sand the filler off unless you can do auto body work. Bondo
Some repaints look worse than the peeling paint.
The castings can be pretty rough without the filler.

I agree, if you are going to paint this machine simply remove the top layer. All you need to do is scuff the bottom layer and clean it very well. Its amazing how tough that old paint is.

If you want an exact color match to the old dark grey, have PPG (local body shop) run an analysis on it. Their computer can give you a cross-reference (if you don't want a quality custom mix for your paint gun).
