Right end stamped into FRONT VERTICAL FACE of front way. It has the L type spindle nose, so late thirties at oldest

12 speed High Duty

Patent Heads are in abundance - must of been a good one to keep around. Thumbnail from 1910

Don't know - some contract numbers maybe. Most of time just the five digit serial and the two digit date

You are right about 1938. Another unexplained thing looking us in the eye

I got a 4 jaw independent Chuck that came with it, the lock plugs that push into the back and hold the screws in are broken and seem to be super hard. Does anyone know where I could get Chuck parts? I'll post some pics tonight of the Chuck.

That is the L2 spindle nose size and I expect that chuck is as old as the lathe

Make some new ones (the screw holders) from 4140 pre hard and get on down the road - or do yourself a favor and get a new Bison or similar quality chuck

If actually L2 draw back nut will be 9 3/8" O.D. like in thumbnail. Might be a good idea to confirm that if you go chuck shopping

thanks i think i might have found some new thrust bearings for this chuck to get by for now. i dont really want to buy a chuck for 10 times what i paid for 2 lathes.

Can anyone give me an idea how much oil is in the headstock? Looks like a lot.

My somewhat larger 24" L&S has 8 gallons. I would imagine a 20" ATW is going to use up most of a five gallon bucket - at least.

I'd use ISO 46 - similar to Mobil DTE Medium
