Pratt & Whitney model B 13" in Austin Tx

The WW2 version with very nice improvements over the 1920 design - like D1-5" spindle nose and now unobtainium spindle bearings by New Departure

Have any pictures? FaceBook is not letting me look at it...

Here is a copy and paste of one for you SW

And the other three

Two serials are given for the 12 B in the serial book - 1521 for 1942 and 2200 for 1947

So we can gather 1954 is from near the end of WW2

Looks like you would need to make yourself some cross feed clutch parts - nothing but a hole there now

Flock of them being made in West Hartford 3 year old plant

Great old B brochure from mid thirties - when the 12 was still the 13 - threaded spindle noses and plain spindle bearings - thanks to Greg Menke for hosting this for me

Hi guys. Here's one I've been looking at. I called the guy and apparently there's some 'slight' damage to the cross slide that 'll need to be fixed, thus the price. Says it was from a college, and is/was running. Don't know condition of spindle bearings, or much else. Anybody familiar w/ the company? He quoted a pretty reasonable price (too low?) for freight to CA. I'm tossing up whether to take a chance on it, but need some feedback.

Looks like it could be an awesome machine. Or is this a minor nightmare in the making?

Based on photos in post number 6 above - and not the one I identified in post number 4 - which is much later

Top of the line tool room lathe 90 years back

Has plain (not ball or roller) spindle bearings - and threaded spindle nose

Here is a great old pub from those days

good luck

It is SLOW - don't think about making it faster - too old, and wrong bearings

Oh. In that case OK, glad I asked, and am only too happy to take your advice. Sure is a cool machine though. Probably the bee's knees at the time.

PS -- Great stuff, that brochure! --thanks

Can the later version of the Model B's be made to turn faster ? Any guess as to what speeds ?

Has generally the same spindle bearings as 12C which went to 1000. What it does not have is all the elegance in head stock gearing built into the C

The plain bearing B went on for years and years never exceeding 500 on the 13 and 16 and never even 400 on the 20"

Basically the 1920 ish 8 speed two spindle bearing head stock with more modern bearings and D1-5" spindle nose

But with far out design features - like the geared power coming thru port in back wall of bed
