6082 or Cast Plate for thin section machining??

Hi,

Does anyone have advice for me on the best approach to machining the part shown in the photo below?

Part is 520mm long x 155mm wide x 16mm high (approx. 20" x 6" x 5/8").

I don't have much experience of parts this size but am worried about it 'warping' in the thin sections where it tapers to zero when stresses are relieved from the material during machining.

Would a cast tooling plate (MIC6/C250) be better than 6082 type alumninium to prevent warping???

Any ideas for best approach?

I will be maching on a Prototrak 3 axis SM2000 (3 axis CNC Bridgeport style)with a spindle speeder upto 16,000 RPM.

Thanks!

Yes MIC6 will be more stable than 6082, but the function of the part will dictate whether you can substitute it or not. MIC6 has less than half the yield strength of 6082-T6

Thank you gregormarwick.

The part will only be in light compression so I think the MIC6 should be fine.
