Adventures of an Amateur Machinist – September

Background

August’s cut produced a sufficient Delrin part. Only one of the six sides was left with a rough finish that needed remedy with some light sanding. In September, the part would have been refixured and the machine tool operated manually to finish the rough surface by a more precise means.

However, this was not done due to unscheduled downtime. The machine would not start and after disassembly it was found that the control was fried. Pocket NC, the manufacturer of the machine tool, was very responsive and helpful providing timely and useful customer service. They take their product and customers very seriously. After a few emails back and forth, a new control was on the way free of charge. The dead control would be shipped back so they could do an autopsy. With everything all said and done, unscheduled downtime was roughly three weeks.

Tool

The Pocket NC is a 5-axis CNC mill. The control is a BeagleBone Black single board computer running Machinekit.

Conclusions

The excellent customer service from Pocket NC was a relief, especially when the only cost is unscheduled downtime. With the unexpected issue, this office project is proving to be closer to a machine shop simulation than anticipated.

Operations scheduled for September have been pushed to October.
