Hello,

HELP...

I have attached a rough sketch detailing my attempts to align the head stock to the tail stock on our BP/Romi 20" x 60" Lathe

Sketch #3 is a 16" long 1.250 TGP shaft, center drilled on both ends. The shaft was indicated to 0.0005" before centers were drilled.
Based on this test I thought everything should be good. But this proved different in sketch #1 and #2.

So I'm chasing my tail....any help would be greatly appreciated.

When I am doing something like this I run the indicator to the headstock end, spin the part and watch the indicator, center the needle in the runout, run it to the tail and spin it and watch to see if the center of needle travel is the same as headstock end. Adjust to center the needle and recheck.

Dail test indicator clamped in the chuck measuring inside the taper turning the chuck
Make sure you have a dail indicater that does not drop measuring upside down
Some people here say that is possible

Problem comes when you measure further away Your lathe bed has to be aligned then to get the same measurement

So first make sure the bedways are aligned (leveled) Then you can be sure the tailstock can be set centered along the whole travel of it
