Doing some job shopping and the tools are important.

Is there a great source for grooving tools similar to Harvey for small endmills? Had a job come up that needed a 25 thou wide groove with 10 thou radiused corners. For a small endmill you look it up on the Harvey page and they usually have it in stock from DBC industrial (slow shipping) or another distributor. Access to that massive collection of tools is pretty valuable even if it takes UPS 2-3 days to get it here.

Am I missing the giant lathe grooving tool emporium website or is there such a thing? What are your preferred endmill/lathe tool distributors for job shopping with quick turn around?

Welp, I'll say it and catch the flak- MSC. They are expensive, but they do ALOT of overnight stuff. They can also work with you to buy from a distributor like Harvey and take care of some of that for you, if you take the time to get set up with a rep.

edit: some tools we buy with generally next day shipping -

(I don't get involved much with lathe at current job)

Huh I have been overlooking the msc website. I'll give them a try. Finding what I want is quite a bit slower than say, McMaster but they do have a decent selection.

Frank, how about a mid-range 3/8" shank grooving tool, say, .07" wide x 1" deep? Your current selection jumps from .039" x 1/2" to .087" x 1-3/4".

This is a tough place to penetrate, since Accupro and others already have a pretty full spread of widths and depths.

Frank, while I have your attention ... how about uncoated 4-flute chamfer mills, esp, 1/8"? I use up a fair # of these little guys on aluminum, and the TiAlN coating is the opposite of helping :).

Regards.

finegrain,

3/8 shank grooving tools .07 x 1.0 depth. No problem. Tialn coated or uncoated?

We have 2 flute uncoated. No problem I will have 4 flute uncoated 90deg chamfer mills in a few weeks. Easy enough.

Not to upstage Frank, but for 1/8" uncoated chamfer mills, look here: S102 - 45deg Chamfer Cutters | MITGI

For custom/oddball cutters of all shapes and sizes, they're great at 3 day or less turnaround as well: QUICK TURN SPECIALS | MITGI

Edit: And for standard stuff, I don't think I know an endmill/cutter manufacturer with an easier to navigate website.
