I'm thinking of purchasing a small 9" x 24" lathe for retrofitting to CNC. I need the crossfeed and the headstock to be CNC controlled. Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you ever used or seen a cam grinder? Every one I've laid my hands on must have weighed over 10K. When you have a big grinding wheel bouncing in and out you need a lot of mass to the machine. Just cause the parts small doesn't mean the machine can be.
Cam grinding is one of the few things you don't need CNC to be competitive. Pretty easy to set a second machine up to make plates from cams you buy. Pretty much every "custom" cam out there is profiles robbed from other cams put together with timing changed.
