Drill Recommendation From your experiences

Looking for reccomendations on your guys favorite drills/inserted drills.

Will be used in a live tool lathe. Axial and radial holes both .3125 diameter not very deep maybe .500.

Material is 303 stainless. tolerance is plus/minus .002

Looking to tool up for decent size production runs.

For 5/16 I would go with solid carbide. Indexable under 1/2 dia are kinda problematic. At least from my experiences.

These work good....
Solid Carbide G3 Series Drill .3125 diameter X 1.457 Flute Length TiAlCN MariTool

Also these are even better, just more expensive..

Solid Carbide CJT Series #114A Drill .3125 dia X 1.438 flute MariTool

These are your best choice, only if your live tools have coolant thru..

Solid Carbide Coolant Thru Drill 294A Series .3125 Diameter MariTool

For the first 2 I would run 230 sfpm and .0045 feed per tooth.
I am assuming normal to bad 303 stainless. If 303MAX or some other version of a free machining stainless increase 20%.

First peck after 1X diameter, after that peck every .6X diameter.

For coolant thru 250sfpm and .005 ipt.

Good luck.

We run a LOT of production stainless 303/316 parts. Our favorite is from YG and called a 'Dream Drill'. You can get them in inch or metric. Through-coolant wherever you can. You might consider a 7.9mm (0.311) for 0.3125 +/-0.002.

I'd also keep in mind the "drill rules":

1) When you need it to be under the drill will cut over.
2) When you need it to be over the drill will cut under.
3) When you don't care it'll cut right on size.

Don't forget these rules.

If you buy 1 drill it will break just before you are done with the job.
If you buy 2 or more drills that one drill will run the entire lot and finish the job.

Kennametal GoDrill 8mm. Lasts forever. Can be run very fast. For the shallow holes you suggest it will do wonders. I'd start at Vc 40 and F0.1 conservatively.

So: S1600 F160.

Guhring is my go to for tough applications and production work.

However, that being said, I made tons of chips with YG Dream Drills in Tool steel.

I second the "Dream Drills" from YG. Run at higher feed rates too then others I've checked into.
