Has anyone else had this issue?

While turning 316 hex bar isn't a great issue once you're under the A/F diameter; facing the bar has always given me a headache. I've tried several brands of inserts, been up and down with the surface speed and feedrate; yet still the problem remains, tool life goes down the sewer on this operation.
Currently I'm using Seco's WNMG080408-MF4, TM3501. I've used a similar insert from Sumitomo, the results are the same.

A tougher grade as opposed to a harder grade can help. A larger tool nose radius can also help.

Strategy will probably help the most. Can you turn past the inscribed circle, leave 0.005", then face?

Or, does your machine have live milling to knock off the corners?

You could also take a round insert and face from the center outwards. It'll behave like a high feed mill.

Lots of different things you can try depending on what you have at your disposal.
