fanuc 5t control

I have a vmc and I use mastercam for programing. I've been looking for a cnc lathe, something dirt cheap in the mid 80' small to mid size. There're a couple of machines on ebay but the sellers can't always tell me if the control has an rs 232 port. Can someone tell about what year rs232 port became more standard. Alot of the machines i been considering have tape readers which is useless to me can a control be converted to have a rs232.

We have a 1979 Mazak M-4 Lathe with Fanuc 5T control. This machine has rs-232. It is difficult to program on the controller because you can only veiw one block of code at a time on the screen. I am not sure if rs-232 was standard at the time. Hope this helps.

Yes on most cnc machine you can add a btr unit ( behind the tape ) this will replace the tape reader. The cost can be upwards of $2000.00. I for one recommend this unit.
All you need to run it is an old pc.
