I don't do a lot of turning, but have been thinking about buying on the used market since I can't justify the cost of new.
All of my parts can be turned from 1-1/4" bar.
If adding live tooling, then maybe 2" bar would give me ability to do live tool bar feed parts.
At this point, it almost seems a step backwards to get just a 2 axis lathe, so live tooling is needed.

No exotic or tough materials. Alloy and carbon steels, brass, bronze, aluminum.

Of course the big holdup is always money. Figure a budget of $35-40k.

What are your recommendations and what would you stay away from with a 10 foot pole.

I picked up some old Miyanos for dirt cheap. Live tooling, 1-3/4” bar capacity and built super solid. They have earned their keep over and over, and still hold tenths. Just ran a job in “the rough one” of about 150 bearing housing in 6061. 3-1/2” o.d. with a 2.439 +.0003 -0.0 bore. Nailed it.
