How many of you that use heat shrink holders also balance your tools? We run our finishing tools (6mm,4mm,2mm,1mm ball nose) at 20,000 rpm. We are having issues with surface finish on our Makino F5, and one of the things the techs recommended was balancing our tools. Makino is also recommending we replace our spindle, which we are probably going to do. This thing has been running 2 10 hour shifts for about 4 years, and has survived a few crashes. We are cutting forge dies made from FX material on this machine.

We have a Schenck balancer on order but no experience with one yet. Quite a bit cheaper than Haimer and Zoller.

What is FX material?

Send us the holders. We can quote just spinning them and letting you know what the GMM is, and verifying if you have a balance issue or not.
Also we can spin them and also balance them. If its a tool that runs for a long time without replacing then we can balance with the tool in the tool holder. Most of the time we drill holes in the flange area.

If memory serves, it is real shit!

OP, isn't it the same (maybe a trade name?) as finkel (spelling?)

Are you using very long holders? What type of shrink fits are you using and at what gauge lenghts? What brand and mfg of cutting tools are you using.

I've found with the F5, and short heat shrink holders of good quality, along with high end cutting tools (Union, OSG, Emuge etc) that there isn't much need to balance the tools even when running 20k for hours on end.

Your spindle may very well be pooched from the crashes.
