Kiwa excel center tool changer problems

My kiwa lost its tool designations. If I try to call up a specific tool number the carousel just keeps on going around. I suspect a bad encoder but I'm not sure how to test it. The control is a fanuc 3m model c. The machine was made in 1984 and it uses dedicated tool pockets. My question is where do I start to diagnose this and what steps do I take to find the problem. One more piece of information I found in the machine manual is it lists a sumtak IP116s71 encoder for magazine indexing. I couldn't really come up with any info on this encoder. Does anyone know a good place to find encoder info? Dan

You can try contacting Oracle Encoder Service in Indiana. They have repaired some encoders for me in the past. I don't know how much info they would be willing to share with you about that specific encoder, but it might be worth a phone call. I'm pretty sure they could test that encoder if you sent it to them.
