Multiaxis CAD/CAM Considerations

Multiaxis manufacturing requires software that is very strong in CAlv. CAD capabllity is needed, but mostly to import CAD files from all the major CAD systems, in all the popular CAD data formats. On top of that requirement, additional CAD capability is needed to create suppofting geometry for tool axis
control, fixture design, or virtual machine building.
High-end CAD/CAM systems are fully associative. If a design change is made, the change will propagate through the entire database and will modify the necessary movements in the toolpath. This feature is helpful if one software package is used for the entire desig n-to-ma nufacturing process. If a single, a ll-encom passing package is not used, then extra cost is being incurred for associativity that cannot be used. Unfortunately, most geometry associativity only works with native geometry.
Most multiaxis shops import files from a variety of customers. These files could have been designed in any number of CAD systems, so it is crucial to be able to read and write in multiple CAD/CAM languages. Once the model is imported, it is critical to have good analysis tools to analyze it and then separate its major features into organized layers or levels.
After the model has been analyzed and organized, some additional geometry creation may be needed. This geometry could include additional wireframe, edge curves, lines, arcs, points, non-trimming surfaces, or even some solid model creation. This work will require light-duty CAD capability.
