We are planning to buy a showroom Dmg Mori NTX-1000, but it doesnt have scales. Could anyone explain why we should not go for it? How important are the scales on such high-end Mill-Turn machines?
Our parts accuracy would not require scales, but we are thinking more long-term and concerns about possible complications in the future with accuracy (or backlash).

Drift on turning centers is a huge issue. Drift on 5 axis machines is arguably an even bigger issue. Alignment, drift, etc... can quickly become a total nightmare on B-axis mill-turns with a sub spindle where there are just so many things that can get out of alignment.

While scales do not necessarily mean everything will be perfect, it does help give some piece of mind. It's a good idea to do everything you can to help maintain accuracy in an environment where tolerance stack can get out of hand quickly.

Personally I would never consider a 5 axis mill without scales. This is doubly true for a 5 axis mill turn. However, we aren't a production shop, and I need to consider versatility, and protect for unexpectedly difficult parts to come through.
