Default Retrofitting tool presetter with standard DRO.... and disadvantages of that ?

FWIW, 1998 vintage KPT Diaset 350.... table top presetter... where the original control has gone belly up....but I never liked it anyway...tiny little LCD screen not much better than a cheap calculator screen.

But wondering if a standard 2 axis DRO like Heidenhain ND780 would have enough functions to be good enough... or something more elaborate like Quadrachek might be better ?

I have a (now dead) quadracheck, and a very much alive Elboni tool presetter, and the two interfaces had basically nothing to do with each other.
I would think a nice DRO set up would work well
    a. Assuming you can get good alignment (or use exsiting scales)
    b. You might end up transmorgrifying some settings - so "tool number" might really be "machine calibration settings" or something like that.
