I saw something online a while back about using an ethernet connected server to run RS232 port stuff, just wondering if anyone has experience with them. Apparently you can connect it to your local area network (ethernet) and it hosts a LAN web page that lets you upload your file to it, then it will feed the data through the rs232 for drip feeding a machine.

I don't know what to expect considering there are a lot of off the shelf devices intended for drip feeding older machines, but if these things actually work they might be great. Moxa and ChiYu are a couple brands available on amazon.

Yes, it can be done, but you have to be careful it will work in your case. The way it is handled is that the RS 232 message is wrapped in a IP data block then sent and unwrapped at the distant end. The distant end then sends the unwrapped conversation asynchronously via a virtual comm port. RS 232 can be implemented many different ways and this is no exception.
