    Default Surface Finish

    Just looking for some recommendation on what is achievable in terms of flatness across an area of 23" x 12.5" (600mm x 320mm) by general milling processes. Based on a mid level macnine such as a Doosan DNM.

    Hi Rusty,

    You're heading reads one way and your question reads another, meaning more like one asking about part geometry capabilities then it does surface finish because of your concerns over flatness on a large-ish plate. Surface finish measurements are generally concerned, or at least taken over small areas so giving the work piece size and flatness as your only concern is confusing. (Surface finish covers way more then flatness) Can you re-word your question or am I just not getting it?

    New/used? Is machine leveled and trammed? Material? Thickness? How many times do you want to shim and flip the part? .0005"-.05"

    most cnc can do .0004" flatness and waviness BUT when part is unclamped or chucked it may warp or spring out of flatness. especially if part has not been annealed or stress relieved
    .
    also clamping or chucking force can distort part, often finish cuts are taken after rechucking at a lower clamping pressure
    .
    uneven temperatures can cause part distortion and when part returns to a stable room temperature its flatness may be effected
    .
    how part is supported matters as it can sag from gravity like supporting a sheet of sheetmetal by the ends, the sheet sags of course
