Testing a dc servo motor

What are you trying to test for?

The first thing I do is give it the smell test, burnt smell probably winding.

Then check the brushes, are they proper length?

Does it turn with a battery or charger? How fast?

What is the voltage and amp rating?

Motor shops have a tester they call a growler I believe. Its like a V block with coils that tests each segment of the armature as you rotate it.

A high voltage brush motor might test good at low voltage but short with high voltage due to brush dust getting in the windings. Never blow air into the brush area as it will push the dust into the windings. Disassemble the motor and flush the windings with a cleaner that will not remove the shellac from the windings. Otherwise you will really have a short and have to have the armature rewound.

I dissambled the whole motor and cleaned with qd electronic cleaner. I also cleaned the commutator with 1000 grit paper to brighten the copper.
