Do modern CNC machines still use gearboxes for threading or is the entire thing computer controlled? I imagine it's possible to do given you would have a servo spindle and servos controlling the leadscrew so you could sync the two electronically. Just wondering if that's what they do now and if so what is the quality of the work. Thanks!

As far as I know it is all electronics, no gearbox used.

Think about it. If they use CNC machines (assuming they are not accurate) to make the thread gages how can you tell if your part is off?
