Deckel FP3L questions

I may be looking at an older, grey, FP3L. The serial number is 1741. About how old would it be.

The machine doesn’t include an overarm bracket or arbor for horizontal milling. Are these hard to find?

What is the collet type on this vintage machine? They look a little different than standard 40 taper tools (but that could be a bad angle for the pictures).

Finally, for someone who grew up on Bridgeport style mills, how easy is it to get used to working from the side/rear of table with a fixed table, traveling column machine?

I like the flexibility of the table design and am intrigued by a fixed table, but have to confess that the operator position is throwing me off a little.

Overarm fit up is the same as the other manual Deckel mills...Same size dovetail, so overarms are out there,
Nothing special with the arbors. Just have to have a style of end bearing that agrees with your outboard support bearing.
Both spindles (horiz and vert) are standard #40 , but the drawbars are different and so the collet or tool holder if you use the standard draw bar,

Normal Deckel practice is 20x2.0 "Buttress" male thread on collet /tool holder or arbor.
Can change the drawbar to accept more standard tooling...Can also adapt industry standard "CAT" or "BT" holders with an appropriate stud to work with the factory draw bar.

Working position can take a bit to get used to if you have lots of "seat time" using a more conventional (ie Bridgeport) mill....It will grow on you.
Long parts will take some adjustment as it will be working away from you., and not across as you are more used to....

Can be some things to consider:
Vertical moves will because of the weight of the moving parts feel heavier than other style machines,,,
Geometry on a well used machine might be somewhat compromised....Wear on the "X" axis will tend to make the vertical casting slope toward the front of the machine affecting the
truth of both the "Z" and "Y".....

They are great for large and heavy parts....

If you can't find one in the USA, overarms and bearings for horizontal milling, that will fit an FP2/3 are often up for sale on German Ebay. These typically cost around 200 Euros for the set. Should be shippable to the USA for around that same cost, maybe a bit less.

In German these are called "Gegenhalter" and "Gegenlager". Here are some search results:

Hi to all,

unless I am mistaken, Deckel never provided any overarms for the FP3, it was that vertical head that doubled as such. (not that an FP2 overarm wouldn't fit though).

So, if you have the vertical head you also have an overarm. Regarding the support, it's a fairly straightforward project to build one, especially on a machine with a horizontal quill!

Hi Thanos,

If that's right, then all that the OP needs is one of these, which can probably be shipped to the USA at reasonable cost, because it's not that heavy, and quite compact:

Gegenlager fur Gegenhalter Deckel FP3 Universalfrasmaschine RHV7766 | eBay

Gegenhalter von Deckel FP Maho Gegenlager TOP | eBay

Gegenlager fur Gegenhalter O17mm Deckel FP Universalfrasmaschine | eBay

Last of these has a bad paint job, looks like a good deal (but note that I have no relation to any of these sellers).

Cheers,
Bruce

Hi Peter,

When I clicked on those links I got this message

<SNIP>

Why ????

I don't know. When you look at the content of my post (visible when you do "reply with quote") you will see that I have only embedded the ebay links, nothing else. A possible solution/workaround for you:

(1) Do "reply with quote" to my earlier message
(2) Find the ebay links
(3) Cut and past link into a new tab or window on your browser

Good luck!
Bruce

Wondering what those links led to Bruce, can't open them either.... I'll try from home as well.

(if it's only the bearing support at the end of the overarm, then yes, he'll need it!)

I'll write to one of the people who maintains the PM web site and ask about this. When I click on the links in post #6, they immediately take me to the correct place.

Your offer could not be found...".
I also see that the original posting just has ebay.de links. Looks like a misconfiguration, malware or else some kind of money grab by the forum software producer or owner :(.

Jessica, who is one of the PM maintainers, wrote back to me that they have fixed the links above. I can not verify this, because they always worked correctly for me, and they did not tell me what what was wrong or how they fixed it.
