    Thanks for the thorough answer Ross.

    Would this sort of boring head, provided the vertical head accepted 40 taper, accomplish a similar increase in clearance, or do you still gain more with the direct collet?:

    You'll have more headroom with the head mounted in a collet. The shank
    shown takes up a surprising amount of headroom. The Wohlhaupters with
    a M4 shank, when mounted in an M4 to 40 taper sleeve, end up being
    much closer to the spindle nose (much like the head mounted in a
    collet that Ross shows).
