Hi Jon.

The U, V and W markings are standard for the terminals for attaching the 3 phases. There are 2 sets, so the motor must be 2 speed with 2 separate sets of windings. The 4 and 8 in the box could/should mean they have 4 and 8 poles, respectively. In Europe with 50 Hz mains that would mean 1500 RPM and 750 RPM minus some slippage. But with 60 Hz in the US you'd get 20% higher RPM's. I would attach the "a"'s to the 4's and the "b"'s to the 8's for a start. But keep the letters together. If it then runs backwards, do not change that. Exchange 2 of the 3 phases in the plug instead.

Then there is the question of star and delta configuration, but it's probably not a problem here. Usually on a singlespeed motor you have u, v and W plus U, V and W. Then you can short u, v and w and the attach the phases to U, V and W. Or shorten U and w, V and u and W and v. Then you have a delta configuration. AFAIR!

But it looks like it's a twospeed motor.

Pictures would be a great help.

Cheers
Erik
