How old is your Deckel FP1?
I was thinking I have an old one ( from 1942 ) but find the info on this forum, and see there VERY old ones.

Numbers of the FP1 machines last delivered in the given year:

1932 6871
1933 7399
1934 7816
1935 8834
1936 10819
1937 12506
1938 13701
1939 15156 hard to read
1940 15889 hard to read (17889?)
1941 18832 hard to read
1942 21682
1943 23182
1944 24643
1945 24743

If this list is correct i have ser# 21489. That looks like a 1942 vintage....Hmmmm, war production eh.
It is a change gear feed machine (that makes sense).
Not bad shape considering the age!
Cheers Ross

OK OK I got tired

it continues

1946 26122
1947 26562
1948 26855
1949 27600
1950 28657
1951 29153
1952 29680
1953 30170
1954 30637
1955 31225
1956 31838 might be 31888
1957 32359 and also 35000 - 35155
1958 32700 but also - 35406
1959 33000 but also - 35633

from here on it gets complicated with parallel numbering sets

Seems also like there never were machines with 40000 numbers.
They jumped from 34606 in 1964 directly to 50000.

Little mistake

last number in 1964 were 34606 and 37490

then came 50000

Oh no no no I take everything back

this sheet is so hard to read.

Parallel numbering up to 38566 (last machine) when the other numbers were at 51622 already.

Confused now ? Me too.
Gotta type this of cleanly sometime.

Got another box of old stuff yesterday and found the US shipping dates there as posted below.

Opened the Machine Shop Forum, found this great thread and decided to put it here.

Tony on the LathesUK site implies that Thiel was the first to produce a mill with the features we associate with modern Deckels, and that the FP1 was inspired by the Thiel.

My Thiel brochure implies the first Thiel mill of this type was offered in 1932.

So the $64,000 question is, what did a pre 1932 Deckel FP look like exactly ? This would determine who was "first", Deckel or Thiel ?

Fasinating to think somewhere out there are possibly some elderly Germans who actually worked at the Deckel and Thiel factories in the 1930's and might remember the design situation back then.

Hi,

Was last week by the Deckel Company in Holland
and did see very old deckels in entry hall, will ask the guys, how about the dates of the old ones.

My FP1 has serial number 8811, which dates it at 1934, it has changewheel feeds, no handwheel (you joggle to change speed by pulling on the pulley, the gard is open at the top.
It has no clutch for the coolant pump. It was imported into the UK by Alexander whose plate it has along with the Deckel plate. It came with a fixed table.
I also have a Master Toolmaker by Alexander has anyone found the serial numbers of these?
All parts appear to interchange with Deckel including the vertical head dovetail.
