Not exactly european.... but close enough?

I Just acquired my first mill (UK Balding Beaver Pal) and I am looking forward to using industrial strength power tools to mangle metal instead of just a forge, hammer, and anvil.

Currently my mill it sits on a car trailer outside my garage but I did spend all day going over the mill. It needs work but the price and location were both right.

Couple of quick questions... First, does this post belong here? If not please redirect me.

Second, I have looked for a manual and can only find a UK site that wants about $100. for one. Is there a different source? I really need a parts list, diagrams and parts source.

This machine needs a little love and a few parts. Where's a good source of parts for a Beaver?

Are there any members that have/had a Beaver mill?

Thanks in advance. I hate to have my first post include so many questions. I don't know much about milling and I plan to start slow. On the other hand, if anyone wants help on making Damascus steel, knifemaking, leather craft, forging.....

Thanks!

A Balding Beaver Pal ??? I think the group might just *have* to see a picture of this one.

Balding Eng were the original owners and builders of Beaver cnc and manual turret mills.I think but I`m not sure that the PAL model was the smaller one.
They pop up on Ebay.co.uk quite often.
I know the guy who bought the rights to the Beaver cnc mills from Mikron (the last owner of Beaver)but don`t know if he also does the manual machines. If you pm me with your emails address I will give you the guys contact details.
Mark.

Mark, I seem to recall the Pal was not actually made by Beaver but a private lable deal, made in Italy or Spain. I vaguely recall seeing a brochure from the actual manufacturer in the darkest cobwebbed corners of my brochure files.

The Pal I owned was not smaller than the standard Beaver mill..if anything it was slightly larger. In fact I never understood why the Pal existed really since the Beaver seemed to fill the same need, but perhaps it was less expensive...beats me.

Mark, see if you can find out why such a stupid name was conjured up for it while you're at it ;)

"Beaver" alludes to an animal that "mills"..so that one is ok...but "Pal" ? What the heck was that all about ?

Mine had a small image of a dog somewhere on the side...so were they thinking something like "this mill will be your best pal" sort of thing ? If so, numerous dope slaps are in order !

Re "worst name"...so you've never seen an Osama Junior lathe I take it ? ;)

(actually even that makes more sense than "Pal" however)

That sure is a wierd setting in the photo...never seen machines draped in clear plastic before....too many birds and bats inhabiting the rafters, roof leaks, or what ?

I found the name to be....pornographic...and....funny!

In that vein, is the Pal balding or the Beaver?

(ok, back to work for me)

Porch paint rebuild...nice one, and accurate too! I spent most of yesterday chipping that paint out of my way to remove bolts and parts. On the plus side, they did add some scrounged parts that are a different color. Gives it that two-toned green look.

Tony emailed me and the manual is on the way. He also supplies parts and can fabricate the ones he doesn't stock from the drawings.

Sean, the beaver is painted and my pal is balding. :D

i saw one of these mills at a local dealer last week. it was missing one of the two switches on the front of the head. any idea what the switch on the right does? we both were scratching our heads why the boys in the weld shop it came from had removed it.

I knew I had a pic' of a UK Balding Beaver Pal somewhere....

P.S. For our international members, there is a part of a woman's anatomy which is commonly referred to as a "beaver"....hence the adolecent amusement. Pal of course...meaning "friend".

I knew that my topic title would get a lot of attention...but Sean...posting that picture was WRONG! on so many levels.

Spent yesterday checking the mill (Sean, notice I didn't say "checking my Beaver Pal"). Found a bolt jammed in between the (excuse my non machinist terminology) ways (?) that the knee elevates on. Had been there limiting the travel for who knows how long. Someone had really cranked on it and gouged the area between the ways.

Next up...see why the spindle won't retract the last two inches into the head. Might need to wait for the manual for that one.

If you have any thoughts from looking at the earlier mill photo why the spindle won't retract, Please post.

Thanks everyone (except Sean and his picture!).

Yeah I know Pete, it's just a darned funny name.

If you want revenge, the word "Deckel" is on the packaging for half the toilet seats in Europe. "Deckel" translates to "Lid".
