Been asked to quote cutting slabs of cobalt chrome, UNS R31537, .060 thick off of a 2.0 x 2.0 bar of material.

From what I can gather this is probably going to be a very hard material to cut.

Does anyone have any experience they can share about cutting it?

Does it warp when cut? And what kind of speeds with .010 wire?

We are running Sodick AG600L machines, they are about 10 years old.

Hi Booze Daily:
Cobalt Chrome has no iron in it, so it's quite different in chemistry from 17-4 PH.
However it is about the same hardness as 17-4 in condition H900 (maybe a bit harder).

nlancaster, I have wire cut cobalt chrome for surgical devices and had no problems whatsoever.
As I recall I just used steel settings and it was all completely uneventful.
However, the pieces I work with are normally much smaller than what you're describing.
The last bit I can recall was for a hip surgery system and that piece was about 3/8" thick.

Try to get a sample to cut before you quote...no one should consider that request unreasonable.

Cheers
