Is EDM the right choice for removing broken stud?

I've got this small engine that has a broken stud in the exposed end of the crankshaft. I have made several attempts at removing it but it is hardened and resists drilling and other mechanical means of removal. Is EDM a good choice for removing the stud?

Will I have to remove the crankshaft from the engine (there is some exposed shaft at the crankcase). Is it expensive? A new engine is about $120.00 (the crankshaft itself is not sold individually).

Let me know your thoughts. Thank you.

Yes, you will have to remove the crankshaft from the engine . . . edm happens under dielectric fluid, which is an oil that becomes gritty with edm'd particles; not good for engines.

Better to buy a new $120 engine.

I’ve had very few studs that could not be removed by welding a nut to the top of the stud. If the threads above the stub are messed up, that’s when welding is a lot harder.
