Aluminum laser slats

The steel slats of our HK laser are melted down to pretty much nothing now and it's time to replace them. Scratching, indentation, and steel splatter on aluminum parts are a constant nuisance, so I was wondering if anyone had experience using aluminum slats instead of steel slats. Copper is out of our budget currently.

I feel as if aluminum won't deteriorate as quickly, but that's basically just a guess. We cut about equal amounts of steel and aluminum in 1/8"-1/4" thickness.

Any reason not to do this? Aluminum is also cheaper right now, which is a bonus. Structurally I'm sure 1/8" aluminum would support our heaviest plates easily.
