Hello,
I’m trying to replace the bearings in the arbor of a Continental 20hp. Chop saw, but I’ll be darned if I can figure out how to take the arbor apart. Can anyone help me out?
gustafson, I think you're right. I tapped on the pulley side of the shaft using an aluminum drift, but no sign of movement at all. Not knowing exactly how the thing is built, I don't know how much force to apply. I think I'll apply some heat to the casting and give it another try.
I wouldn't put too much heat on it, I'd support the opposite side (yes, have to take it mostly apart, flip it on it's side and block up the housing), protect the end of the shaft, and hammer it out. The shock from hammering should free it up. No concern for the bearings, as you're installing new ones.
