We have an old lathe that had a overhead drive system and were wanting to attach a gearbox and vfd 7.5 hp 3 ph motor. I had an old faye scott that was adapted that way. Any sugestions.

What RPM does it need?

I'd personally just mount another flat belt pulley on a jackshaft to drive the lathe, and use a V belt to connect the motor to the jackshaft.

why not connect it the old way , but use a vfd to control it. it sorta' worked then. if you have
control of the ac frequency , with a Dodge or whatever 3 speed truck
gearbox in control. and you can go to higher rpms, 700-800 is ok... they didn't have hss or carbide.
nobody cared. so those 400 rpm top speeds were fine then. going from lineshaft belts to hangover ac-motors
must have been a revolution. don't be afraid to go too fast . you will hear it howl if starts to detonate.
good luck.

I don't remember much about it but when I was a kid Dad had an old flat belt lathe somehow hooked to a Harley Davidson transmission.
